Zaelen found himself restless, staring at the ceiling in his room at the inn. There hadn't been any contact from Gelyndor for a few days now. The longer he waited, the longer his retirement was delayed. Realizing that sleep was a distant dream and that it was early morning anyway, he pulled on a simple tunic and trousers. He chose to reignite an old habit—his workout routine.

As the first light of daybreak touched the horizon, Zaelen slipped out through a side entrance of the city, opting to run outside the walls. In Verdantia, jogging for exercise was an uncommon sight, and the fewer people he encountered, the better.

The rhythmic pounding of his boots against the uneven ground provided a therapeutic release, each step driving away the built-up tension from his body.

I can't believe how out of shape I've become. Earth's really made me soft, he thought to himself.

As he moved, Zaelen intermittently stopped to do some calisthenics, ensuring he gave his muscles a comprehensive workout. After a few hours, he felt satisfied with the effort he'd put in.

“You're getting close to the city, sir,” Dex warned in Zaelen's head as he was on the way back to the city.

Without a word of acknowledgment, Zaelen slowed his superhuman speed to a normal jog, then slowed to a walk.

Shortly after, a woman frantically looking around came into view.

Once she spotted Zaelen, she headed straight for him. Before she could say anything, he held up a hand to silence her and kept walking, not wanting to give her the time of day.

“Please, good sir. You must help me!”

Zaelen kept walking.

The woman, not taking no for an answer, turned and grabbed a hold of Zaelen's arm. “Please! There are some men after me.”

Zaelen sighed, figuring he couldn't ignore the woman anymore. “Go find a cultivator then. I can't help you.”

“I'll give you anything. Please! And I do mean anything.” The woman batted her eyes seductively while showing some cleavage.

It was clearly a trap and one Zaelen had no inclination to fall into. He could spot the farce as soon as eyed the woman. He'd let his guard down before and Gryllis pulled one over him. Never again.

Moments later, the distinct clopping of a horse, paired with the rattle of a carriage, approached Zaelen from behind. Spotting the distressed woman, a merchant in a horse-drawn carriage hastened his pace.

“Oh, great,” Zaelen muttered to himself, not looking in the woman's direction.

“Perhaps I can be of some assistance, miss,” a brave young merchant called as the carriage came to a halt beside the pair.

“I'd recommend against that, fella,” Zaelen warned.

“Nonsense! How can you be so cold? A young woman is out here seeking help and you turn her away? Well, I cannot!”

The woman who approached had a youthful allure, her light brown hair falling in soft waves just past her shoulders.

Zaelen rolled his eyes. I'm pretty sure you're just a sucker for freckles, he thought to himself.

“Thank you, mister, but I've already got some help. You can be on your way,” said the woman, not letting go of Zaelen's arm.
